Life is full of lessons, and one of the most important lessons we can learn is that we can't take material things with us when we leave this world. Your cash, house, car, career, accomplishments, and trophies—none of these things will matter when you are gone. What will matter is who you are as a person, your character. When your time on Earth is over, the only thing that goes with you is YOU.

Character Over Things

We live in a world where people often focus on what they can achieve, what they can own, or how successful they can become. There's nothing wrong with having goals, working hard, or being successful, but we must remember that material things are temporary. Money can be spent, cars can break down, and even the biggest house can be lost. None of these things are permanent, and they certainly won’t follow you after you leave this life.

Your character, on the other hand, stays with you. It’s who you are deep inside. Character is built through your thoughts, actions, and choices. It’s about honesty, kindness, patience, and how you treat others. God cares deeply about who you become, not just what you accomplish. He wants you to grow in character, to become a better version of yourself, and to reflect the love and kindness of Jesus.

God's Plan for You

God didn't create you just to live for material things. He placed you on this earth for a purpose, and part of that purpose is to grow spiritually. He wants you to develop qualities like love, patience, humility, and kindness. These are the traits that matter to God because they shape your soul and bring you closer to Him.

The Bible says, "For to this you have been called, because Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example, so that you might follow in His steps" (1 Peter 2:21). Jesus lived a life of love, patience, and humility, and we are called to follow His example. Jesus didn’t live for wealth or fame. Instead, He lived to serve others and to do God’s will.

Trials Help Us Grow

One of the most important ways we develop our character is through challenges. It may not seem like it, but tough times are often when we grow the most. God didn’t even spare Jesus from going through difficult times, including suffering on the cross. If Jesus went through hardships, we can expect to go through them too. But it’s during these hard times that we learn the most about life and about ourselves.

Imagine if everything always went your way. If you got everything you wanted and never faced any problems, you wouldn’t grow. In fact, you might become spoiled or ungrateful. Hard times teach us patience and endurance. They remind us that we are not in control of everything and that we need to rely on God. When we face problems, we have the chance to become stronger, wiser, and more loving people.

This is what I call the "classroom side of life." Life is full of lessons, and many of these lessons come through hardship. In school, we learn by studying and taking tests. In life, we learn through experiences, especially difficult ones. The trials you go through today can help shape you into a stronger, more compassionate person tomorrow.

Life Is Not About You

Another important lesson to learn in life is that it's not all about you. It’s easy to get caught up in our own lives, our own problems, and our own goals, but life is much bigger than just us. The whole goal of life is learning unselfishness. God didn’t create us to just focus on ourselves. He created us to love Him and to love others.

Jesus taught that the greatest commandment is to love God with all your heart, soul, and mind, and the second greatest is to love your neighbor as yourself. This is what life is really about. When we focus only on our own desires and needs, we miss out on the joy that comes from loving and serving others. Real happiness doesn’t come from getting more things or achieving more success. It comes from building relationships, helping others, and living a life of love.

When you focus on loving God and others, you find fulfillment and joy that material things can’t give you. Loving others helps you see beyond yourself, and it brings a deep sense of peace and purpose. You may not always feel happy in the moment, especially when life is tough, but when you live for love, you find joy even in hard times.

God Knows Everything About You

It's comforting to know that God knows everything about you. He knows your thoughts, your struggles, your dreams, and your fears. He knows what you’re going through, and He cares deeply for you. Sometimes, we might feel alone or like no one understands us, but God always understands. He is always with you, guiding you and helping you grow.

He sees the big picture of your life. While we only see what’s happening right now, God sees everything—past, present, and future. He knows what’s best for you, even when you don’t. So, when life gets hard or when things don’t go the way you want, trust that God is working in your life. He is using these experiences to shape you into the person He created you to be.

Conclusion

In the end, life isn’t about how much money you made, what kind of car you drove, or how many trophies you won. Life is about growing in character, loving others, and becoming more like Jesus. The material things of this world won’t last forever, but your soul will. The person you become and the love you give to others are what truly matter.

So, as you go through life, remember that the challenges you face are opportunities to grow. Keep your focus on God and on becoming the person He created you to be. Love others, serve others, and live a life of kindness and humility. That’s where you will find true fulfillment and joy. And when your time on Earth is done, you’ll take with you the most important thing of all—your character.
