Walking with Jesus can be a wonderful and fulfilling journey, but it’s important to understand that it won’t always be easy. Many people believe that following Jesus will lead to a smooth and trouble-free life, but the reality is often different. Here’s a closer look at why life may be challenging when you choose to walk with Jesus, and how you can navigate these difficulties with faith and strength.

1. Challenges and Trials

One of the main reasons life isn’t easy when you walk with Jesus is because you will face challenges and trials. The Bible says in John 16:33, “In this world, you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” This means that even though you follow Jesus, you will still face hardships like illness, financial struggles, or personal loss.

These challenges can feel overwhelming, but they are a part of life for everyone, not just those who follow Jesus. However, walking with Jesus gives you a different perspective. You have the support of your faith and the comfort of knowing that you are not alone in your struggles.

2. Different Values and Beliefs

When you choose to follow Jesus, your values and beliefs might differ from those around you. For instance, you might believe in forgiveness and love, even when others around you choose anger or revenge. You might value honesty and integrity, even if it means facing difficulties or losing friends.

Living by these values can sometimes lead to misunderstandings or conflicts with others. People may not understand why you make certain choices or why you hold certain beliefs. This can be difficult, especially if you feel isolated or judged by those around you.

3. Sacrifice and Self-Denial

Following Jesus often requires sacrifice and self-denial. Jesus taught that to follow Him, you must be willing to give up your own desires and put others first. In Luke 9:23, Jesus says, “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me.”

This can mean making tough choices, such as giving up certain comforts or facing personal challenges. For example, you might have to choose between a career opportunity that benefits you but goes against your values, and a less lucrative path that aligns with your faith. These choices can be difficult and may require a lot of prayer and reflection.

4. Persecution and Criticism

Sometimes, following Jesus can lead to persecution or criticism from others. In some places, Christians face real danger and violence because of their faith. In other situations, you might experience ridicule or rejection from people who don’t understand or agree with your beliefs.

This kind of persecution can be painful and discouraging. However, Jesus promised that those who are persecuted for their faith are blessed. In Matthew 5:10, He says, “Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.” This verse can give you hope and strength during tough times.

5. The Need for Constant Growth

Walking with Jesus means you are on a journey of continual growth and learning. You will face times when you struggle with your faith or feel distant from God. It can be hard to stay strong and committed when you don’t feel close to Jesus or when you face doubts.

However, this is a normal part of the journey. Growth in faith often comes from overcoming these struggles and learning more about yourself and your relationship with Jesus. It’s important to keep seeking God through prayer, reading the Bible, and being part of a supportive Christian community.

6. The Call to Love and Forgiveness

Jesus calls His followers to love others, even those who may hurt or wrong you. This can be one of the hardest parts of walking with Jesus. Loving people who have hurt you, or forgiving those who have wronged you, can be incredibly challenging.

Yet, Jesus teaches that love and forgiveness are central to His message. In Matthew 5:44, He says, “But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you.” This command can lead to personal growth and healing, but it also requires a lot of strength and grace.

7. Finding Strength in Jesus

Even though life won’t always be easy when you walk with Jesus, you can find strength and support in Him. Jesus promises to be with you through every trial and difficulty. In Matthew 11:28, He invites, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.”

This promise means that you don’t have to face challenges alone. You can rely on Jesus for comfort, guidance, and strength. Prayer, reading the Bible, and being part of a church community can help you stay connected to Jesus and find the support you need.

8. Hope and Joy

Despite the difficulties, walking with Jesus also brings hope and joy. Jesus offers a sense of purpose and a deeper understanding of life. You can find joy in knowing that you are living according to God’s will and making a difference in the world.

In Romans 15:13, Paul writes, “May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.” This hope and joy can sustain you through hard times and remind you of the greater purpose and blessings that come from following Jesus.

Conclusion

Walking with Jesus is a journey filled with both challenges and rewards. Life won’t always be easy, and you may face trials, misunderstandings, and sacrifices. However, you can find strength, comfort, and hope in Jesus. By staying connected to Him through prayer, reading the Bible, and being part of a supportive community, you can navigate the difficulties with faith and resilience. Remember that Jesus is with you every step of the way, offering support and guiding you through the ups and downs of life.
