Are you tired of living paycheck to paycheck? You work hard, the money comes in, and it's gone before the month ends. You're not alone — and you're not stuck.
After over 20 years in banking, I've seen this cycle up close. Breaking free doesn't require a six-figure income. It requires a simple system, consistent habits, and the right tools to track your progress.
If you're asking "how do I stop living paycheck to paycheck," here are the 7 steps that actually work.
1. Face Your Real Numbers
You can't fix what you don't measure. For 7 days, write down every single dollar you spend. Not in an app — on paper. This awareness is the foundation of my book Money Made Simple: A Guide to Saving and Living Better, which is designed as a simple guide to saving, budgeting, and financial peace.
Action: List your take-home pay, then your fixed bills (rent, utilities, debt minimums). What’s left is your freedom number.
2. Create a Paycheck Plan, Not Just a Budget
A traditional budget tells you what you can't spend. A paycheck plan tells every dollar where to go before you spend it.
Try the 70/20/10 method:
- 70% for Living - bills, groceries, gas
- 20% for Safety - savings, debt payoff
- 10% for Future You - investing, giving, dreams
3. Build a $1,000 Starter Emergency Fund
Why do most paycheck-to-paycheck cycles never end? One emergency. A flat tire, a medical bill, and you're back to credit cards.
In my ebook Revenge Saving Explained: Smart Ways to Save Money in Uncertain Times, I talk about how to start saving money after hard times — job loss, big bills, or emergencies — and build a safety net to feel peaceful again. Start with $1,000. It's not your full emergency fund, but it's enough to stop the bleeding.
4. Stop Pretending to Be Rich
One of the biggest traps I see is lifestyle inflation. We spend to look secure instead of being secure.
That’s why I wrote Stop Pretending to Be Rich When You Are Broke and You Are Not Going to Die Without Credit Cards. True wealth is quiet. It’s having money in the bank when no one is watching.
5. Track It to Make It Real
Motivation fades. Trackers don't. This is where most people fail — they have good intentions but no daily system.
I created two journals specifically for this:
1. Savings Tracker & Challenge Journal with Gratitude Notes
This all-in-one journal makes saving simple and fun. Inside you’ll find daily & weekly savings trackers, savings challenges, and gratitude notes to keep your mindset positive and focused. It turns saving from a chore into a win you can see every day.
2. Financial Peace Is the Ultimate Luxury – 100-Page Journal
With 100 lined pages for writing, planning, and reflecting, this journal is designed to help you organize your finances, track your savings, or simply jot down your thoughts while embracing financial freedom. It’s a gentle reminder that peace of mind is the true wealth. Pick one, put it where you see it daily, and write in it for 5 minutes every morning.
6. Apply Timeless Wisdom to Your Money
Financial stress isn't just about math, it's about mindset. My newest series connects Biblical wisdom with practical banking insights.
In What Proverbs 4 Says About Money, I share wisdom from the Bible and my 20 years in banking to help you take control of your finances. When your values and your spending align, stopping the paycheck-to-paycheck cycle becomes a purpose, not just a punishment.
7. Pay Yourself Like a Bill
Automate $25 on every payday. Treat your savings transfer like your electric bill — non-negotiable. Even small, consistent steps create big momentum. This is the core of Small Steps Every Day and the entire philosophy behind my journals.
You Don't Need More Money, You Need a System
Breaking the paycheck-to-paycheck cycle isn't about making more. It's about:
- Knowing where your money goes
- Giving every dollar a job
- Tracking progress daily with gratitude
- Building peace, not just a bank balance
You can start today with what you have.
